Flutist Ransom Wilson in Dual Role as Conductor and Soloist with The Chamber Orchestra of Philadelphia

March 14, 2006

Ransom Wilson is the conductor and featured soloist at The Chamber Orchestra of Philadelphia's Sunday, April 2, and Monday, April 3, concerts in the Perelman Theater at the Kimmel Center.

"Ransom Wilson displays his wide-ranging gifts as soloist in two beautiful Baroque works, and as conductor in three contrasting pieces from the past century," said Chamber Orchestra of Philadelphia Music Director Ignat Solzhenitsyn.

Hovhaness' Alleluia and Fugue, Op. 40b, and Respighi's Ancient Airs & Dances, Suite No. 3, open the program. Maestro Wilson then performs as soloist in Vivaldi's Piccolo Concerto in C Major, RV 443 - one of the few concertos for the instrument and an excellent showpiece of Baroque-style playing.

Benjamin Britten's Simple Symphony, Op. 4, opens the second half of the program. Maestro Wilson then performs as flute soloist in J.S. Bach's Orchestra Suite No. 2 in B Minor, BWV 1067, the smallest and most intimate of the composer's four Orchestral Suites.

Maestro Wilson, widely considered the best flutist of the post-Rampal generation, is the co-founder and former Artistic Director of Oklahoma's famed OK Mozart Festival, Music Director of the Idyllwild Arts Academy Orchestra and Music Director of Solisti New York.

The Sunday matinee performance will be followed by "Classical Conversations," a brief question-and-answer session with Maestro Wilson.
