Jahja Ling and David Shifrin to Join The Chamber Orchestra of Philadelphia in ConcertClarinetist Shifrin to make Perelman Theater debutDecember 12, 2005 San Diego Symphony Music Director Jahja Ling returns to the Perelman Theater to lead The Chamber Orchestra of Philadelphia in a program featuring works by Copland, Weber and Haydn on Sunday, January 8 at 2:30 PM and Monday, January 9 at 7:30 PM in the Perelman Theater at the Kimmel Center.
"Jahja Ling returns by popular acclaim to share his visions of Haydn and Copland, while the renowned David Shifrin makes his Perelman Theater debut in a scintillating concerto by Carl Maria von Weber - himself making a much-welcome return to our season roster," Chamber Orchestra Music Director Ignat Solzhenitsyn said. The original chamber version of Aaron Copland's ballet score to Appalachian Spring opens the performance. This stirring piece evoked images of the Appalachian Valley for American dance legend Martha Graham, who named the work. David Shifrin, an artist member of the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center and Artistic Director of Chamber Music Northwest (Portland, Oregon), makes his Perelman Theater debut when he joins the ensemble as soloist in Weber's Clarinet Concerto No. 2 in E-Flat Major, Op. 74. The program concludes with Haydn's Symphony No. 88 in G Major, a typically charming Haydn work in which the composer stretches the traditional orchestral resources of his time in innovative ways, revealing him as one of the major precursors of the "modern" symphony. Jahja Ling has been Director of the Cleveland Orchestra's Blossom Festival since the summer of 2000 and recently completed an 18-year tenure as that orchestra's Resident Conductor (1984-2002). He is also the Music Director Laureate of The Florida Orchestra in the Tampa Bay area, where he served as Music Director from 1988-2002. Maestro Ling last performed with the Chamber Orchestra of Philadelphia in January, 2002. The Sunday matinee performance will be followed by "Classical Conversations," a brief question-and-answer session with Maestro Ling and Mr. Shifrin. # # # |
